‘Curls have never been more popular,’ says celebrity hair stylist Alex Price, who created these looks. And the good news is that heat and humidity can do wonderful things to corkscrews and ringlets. ‘All you need to do is scrunch in a good hair oil, which will give curls a uniform shape and add shine,’ Alex explains. We like L’Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil, £9.99/999 points (100ml). ‘Leave hair to air-dry and let the weather do the hard work. You can encourage more volume by gently brushing out your curls,’ she adds.
Whatever the length, naturally straight hair needs only a hint of a salt spray – such as Schwarzkopf Got2b Beach Matt Texturizing Salt Spray, £4.19/419 points (200ml) – spritzed through when damp to create subtle texture and movement. ‘The key to perfect beachy waves is to let your locks dry slowly in the sun, rather than blasting them with a dryer,’ says Alex. ‘Use your hands to encourage the shape – bend strands or wrap them round your fingers and even poker-straight hair will start to have movement.’
Fine hair that frizzes, or thick hair that gets hot, needs to be taken off the neck and face. ‘Brilliant for the beach, festivals and weddings, knots are a great way of putting hair up without the need for lots of grips,’ says Alex. ‘First, make a centre parting. Working on one side, take a section at the front, divide in two and knot the two strands together so they feel tight. Then, working backwards, take pieces of hair from each side, add to the section and knot again. Carry on until the nape of the neck, twist into a bun and pin in place. Repeat on the other side and wrap remaining hair into the bun.’ This works on most styles, from bobs to mermaid-length locks.
If your hair expands in the heat, braids are your go-to. ‘A fishtail plait is so easy, but looks like it’s taken hours,’ says Alex. ‘Gather your hair over one shoulder, tie in a pony with a band and divide the length into two. Take a small strand from the left, cross it over and add to the right. Then take a strand from the right, cross it over and add to the left. Repeat down the pony, then secure at the end and remove the band from the top.’ Ideal for whenever you want to make a statement this summer.
