My morning ritual is… all about getting Sienna up. She sleeps for 12 hours, until 7am, when I give her a milk feed in bed. Once downstairs, I sip a coffee while I give Sienna her breakfast. Then, during her first nap at 9am, I get myself dressed and ready for the day.
My bedtime routine is… unwinding with a candlelit bath and listening to classical music. Before I climb into bed at 9pm, I spritz This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray. Bloom And Blossom also does a really nice one for babies (Bloom And Blossom Maltilda’s Magical Pillow Spray). The last thing I do is a body-scan meditation on the Calm app. By the end, I’m normally asleep.
I always tell my loved ones to… get some fresh air if they’re feeling stressed. Getting my heart rate up and some endorphins going [by being active outdoors] really helps me.
My favourite mantra is… ‘The same thing doesn’t work for everyone’. As a parent, you have to find what works for you, trust that you know what’s best for your baby and go with your gut instinct. That said, asking other mums for advice [on social media] has been useful – such as when Sienna had hip dysplasia. I had such an amazing response.
I love to cook… stews and one-pot wonders with vegetables and rice. I like making simple dishes. I cook to unwind, so Hugo [Taylor, Millie’s husband] usually feeds Sienna and puts her to bed while I make us a nice dinner. Once we’ve talked about our days, we’ll zone out watching something trashy like Selling Sunset or Below Deck. Tonight we’re having a date night, so I’m making carbonara and we’ll watch a movie. Dream evening in!
My favourite way of relaxing is… reading. It didn’t seem possible early on [in motherhood] but now Sienna’s in a routine, I can read before I go to sleep. Right now, I’m reading Dolly Alderton’s new book, Ghosts. I also love podcasts: Made By Mammas is really good. Lots of my friends, including Caggie Dunlop and nutritionist Madeleine Shaw, have their own podcasts – if I haven’t seen them for a while, I enjoy giving them a listen.
Exercise involves… a mixture of strength and weight training, Fluidform Pilates and walking. I exercise three or four times a week – it’s important for making me feel good, physically and mentally. Since having Sienna, I’ve realised I can’t expect my body to feel, be and look the same as before. I try not to compare myself with how I was, because that can be unhealthy and dangerous. I’m now six-and-a-half months postpartum and I’ve lost the baby weight gradually.
My biggest turn on is… seeing Hugo as a dad. He’s taken to it so well, and watching him with Sienna, he looks very hot! Because of lockdown, I feel lucky that he’s had that time with her, rather than only two weeks of paternity leave.
The bad habit I’m glad I’ve kicked is… being critical of myself. When I was younger, I didn’t love my body, but since having a baby I’ve got a newfound respect [for it].
I inject positivity into my life by… speaking to my family, getting fresh air, going for walks, getting enough sleep and not drinking much alcohol. I’m 31 and I know myself well enough to know what makes me feel in the best possible head space.
No.1 on my gratitude list is… Sienna. Becoming a parent is tough in so many ways and it can be easy to be negative, so it’s about remembering the positives. Sienna is healthy and we’ve sorted issues with her hips and reflux. I practise gratitude daily, whether physically by keeping a gratitude journal or just saying to myself what I’m grateful for.
Having a baby has taught me… to live more in the moment and take every day as it comes. Each day, you don’t know what your baby is going to throw at you!
