My morning ritual is… I wake up at 5.30am, an hour or two before I start work, to get some ‘me time’. I grab a coffee and go for a walk with my golden retriever, Buttons, to gather my thoughts. On average, I get in about 8,000 steps. My phone has taken over my life so it stays at home during that walk. When I get back, I eat a wholesome, high-protein breakfast, such as oats with a scoop of protein, flaxseeds, almonds, honey and fruit.
My bedtime routine is… I work out for an hour at 5pm, six times a week. I schedule it in my diary like an appointment; then, after a shower and dinner, I enjoy a hot peppermint tea and get my nose in a book. I love reading about digital apps and marketing: those kinds of topics are fun to me! I also put my phone away an hour before heading to bed.
I always tell my loved ones to… take care of yourself before you take care of me. Without time for yourself you can’t be good for those around you. I have 22 employees, run two businesses [Tone and Sculpt app and Oner Active]. My life used to be one big rush, but since committing to getting up early and having time to myself, I’m much calmer.
My favourite mantra is… ‘do this for you‘. How many times have you done something to get someone else’s approval? The minute you focus on doing something purely for yourself and your happiness, it switches your mindset. Think about fitness as being beneficial for your health, rather than looking a certain way – focusing on the approval of others isn’t sustainable.
I love to cook… breakfast. It’s my favourite meal because it sets me up for the day. As a treat, I have toasted sourdough bread with salted butter, topped with sautéed spinach and two fried eggs. Some types of food bring back memories of my childhood, including my mum’s stuffed peppers and aubergines. The other day she arrived with a plate of them and it instantly reminded me of growing up in Albania!
My favourite way of relaxing is… spending time with friends and family. Being on social media all the time can get a bit much mentally, but being around the people I love brings me back to reality and grounds me.
Exercise to me involves… a challenge! During the pandemic, I’ve created my own small, home gym and I’ve seen better results by training with a barbell, dumbbells, a medicine ball and a skipping rope, than by using heavy gym machines. Try a pair of dumbbells, because the exercise opportunities are limitless, but, remember, working out should be challenging. If you get to 12-15 reps and find the movements super-easy, up the weight. Then, if you’re struggling after 5-6 reps, reduce the weight. There shouldn’t be shortcuts to fitness – invest in your health.
My biggest turn on… is a man who has his own life and passions. I don’t want a guy to be obsessed with me; he needs to have his own things going on!
The bad habit I’m glad I’ve kicked… I never used to have boundaries, so I’ve been taken for granted a lot. I was cheated on in my first relationship and at the time I believed it was because I wasn’t enough. Now that I understand self-worth, that would never happen.
I inject positivity into my life by… looking at the bigger picture and not letting tiny things consume me. When I face a problem, I think, ‘How can I resolve it?’ and ‘What’s going to be the positive out of this?’. There’s always something to learn from a negative if you look deeply enough. Of course, exercise injects positivity. Have you ever regretted doing a workout? Exactly!
No.1 on my gratitude list is… being able to help as many women as possible worldwide. It’s all so mind-blowing. Growing up in Albania, I didn’t have fitness role models – women who wore shorts at the gym were frowned on, so at first my dad thought that what I was doing was inappropriate. Now he’s my biggest supporter and that means the world to me.
