First up, Happy International Women’s Day! Always an important date in our calendar (8 March), as IWD celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women globally – and heck, we’ve got a lot to be proud of! The theme this year? #ChooseToChallenge, the idea that a challenged world is an alert world and, individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions. Sadly, there’s still a lot of work to be done, as women remain woefully under-represented at many levels of decision-making worldwide (for example, accounting for just one quarter of members of parliament globally, according to UN Women). This IWD asks us to ‘raise your hand high to commit to choose to challenge and call out inequality’. Watch this powerful video for inspiration on how. And while you’re here, get inspired by these empowering women paving the way.
To say we’re *buzzing* about the new skincare arrivals at Boots is an understatement. Here’s an intro to three brilliant brands:
Glow Hub: Think natural actives and cute packaging. We love Glow Hub Nourish & Hydrate Cleansing Balm, which stars coconut oil, peach, shea butter and hyaluronic acid.
Dr. Jart+: A cult Korean label that’s all about high-performance, science-backed ingredients. The Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Re.pair Serum soothes irritation and helps boost the skin’s defences against dryness.
Florena: This gem uses fermentation to turn flowers and oils into skin-nourishing power players. Try Florena Fermented Skincare Illuminating Facial Oil for a radiance lift.
It turns out that what you do between the sheets can impact your snooze quality. When researchers from sleep site The Dozy Owl asked people to wear shut-eye monitors after having sex, they discovered that nookie was found to increase men’s rapid eye movement (REM) 10% more than women’s. (That’s the type of kip during which most of our dreaming occurs and it helps with memory consolidation, too.) The most effective positions found from their research? Doggy style, lotus and eagle. Nope, we haven’t heard of the last two either. Still, we’re all about more ways to score a good night’s sleep…
If the sight of your blunt, hair-filled razor greets you accusingly every time you go to the bathroom, you’re not alone. Research reveals just 16% of women regularly replace their razor blades after a few uses and 43% admit they don’t understand the benefits of using pre- and post-shaving products for their skin. Sound familiar? Show your legs some loving by using a soothing shaving gel, such as Sunny The Shave Gel Cucumber Aloe (200ml). We rate Venus Extra Smooth Sensitive Rose Gold Metal Handle Razor – the weighty handle means you get much more control (bye-bye, knee nicks), plus the razor handle is reusable. Seal the deal with NIVEA Rich Nourishing Deep Moisture Serum, and your legs will look officially out of hibernation. Spring, we’re coming for you!
The beauty struggle is real: more than 40% of women over the age of 35 report having a ‘parched’ complexion. That said, a recent survey also found many of us aren’t actually sure what ‘dry’ means in a skin sense and how to tackle it. Well, in short, dry skin lacks water, so drinking enough H2O is your first step. Targeted products are also a winner for reintroducing moisture. Our faves? Avène Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum, with its long-lasting soothing formula; L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Re-hydrating Day Cream, designed for mature and menopausal skin; and Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask – consider this one your next self-care treat. Now, drink up!
