Male mental health focus

This year has taken its toll on our collective mental wellbeing, and men are no exception. In the new Covid-19 Crisis Survey for Men, all 100 respondents agreed their mental health has been negatively impacted by the pandemic. They reported feelings of depression and anxiety, lack of appetite, sleep issues and reduced libido, with 60% not making time to socialise with friends and family. The research, conducted by psychotherapist Noel McDermott, also revealed participants’ concerns about their children and finances. Head to the NHS website for helpful resources and read about one man’s experience of living with depression here.

If you’re worried about a loved one, you can find advice at samaritans.org or freephone 116 123; mind.org.uk; and time-to-change.org.uk.

Get on your bike

To relieve the pressure on public transport, the Government has announced a £2 billion package to get us cycling and walking more, including a bike repair voucher scheme. Hurrah! But, for those of us who haven’t cycled since childhood, how can we ride safely? According to Victoria Joyce, clinical tutor in sport physiotherapy and rehabilitation at Liverpool Hope University, it’s about building up gradually, taking rest breaks and nailing your saddle height. Adjust the latter while wearing the shoes you plan to cycle in, so you can get it spot on. Now that’s pedal power.
