Rihanna's make-up artist, Hector Espinal, shares his lockdown tips

Fenty Beauty's global make-up artist tells us about the products he's relying on to get through self-isolation, plus his mood-boosting advice
Talk us through your daily routine during lockdown

I’m normally always travelling for work and on the go, so, initially, I couldn’t wrap my head around being at home. But since then, I’ve developed a routine that keeps me motivated. Every day, I start my morning with a coffee and by checking social media, where I draw inspiration for my art. Even if I don’t have any video conferences, I still apply some make-up. Then I tend to my indoor plants and prepare food. Once a week, I have a day for self-care. I do a manicure, trim my beard, clean up my brows and exfoliate my lips with Fenty Beauty Pro Kiss’r Lip Loving Scrubstick. And, on Fridays, I like to do a full Fenty face!

What are your top 3 tips for staying positive in these challenging times?
  1. Play music and dance! Music always helps motivate me and improves my mood. Whenever I’m feeling down, I just turn up my favourite jams and dance – this literally gives me life!
  2. Wear make-up. Putting it on in the morning is a ritual I’ve always had and it makes me feel as though I’m ready for anything. It’s truly amazing how just a bit of Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Concealer and Brow MVP Ultra Fine Brow Pencil & Styler make me feel more normal.
  3. Spritz on a fragrance. I wear cologne every day and it totally changes my mood. The scent reminds me of positive moments in the past, elevates my spirits and gives me instant confidence to take on the day.
What is the one Fenty Beauty product you're still applying every day despite being in lockdown, and why?

Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer! It’s made with shea butter, so it’s super nourishing on lips. I apply this at least a few times a day to keep my pout hydrated and smooth.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with motivation during isolation?

Look within yourself and find things that make you happy. Now is the perfect time to self-reflect or even practise something that maybe you didn’t have time for in the past. Make-up has always been an outlet for me, so I’ve been using this time to find inspiration, come up with ideas and explore new techniques.

How have you been staying on top of your beauty routine during lockdown?

My make-up routine is a moment each day when I disconnect from the news and focus on myself. I apply Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Concealer under my eyes to conceal any dark circles, and I fill in my brows using the Brow MVP Ultra Fine Brow Pencil & Styler. Then I like to bring some hydration to my skin with What it Dew Makeup Refreshing Spray. This instantly plumps it up with dewy moisture, and the light floral scent soothes me. I finish with Full Frontal Volume, Lift & Curl Mascara to open up my eyes and make me look more awake. I love it, because I can quickly build up volume with the fat side of the brush and curl with the flat side.

What’s the first thing you’re looking forward to doing when things go back to normal?

Making the world beautiful again! I love being on set and seeing my art come to life!

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given?

Less is more, and start slow. With any application, whether it’s foundation, eyeshadow or brow products, you should slowly build it up to the perfect amount of coverage. So, with foundation, for example, instead of pumping it directly onto your face, add a blob to the back of your hand and pick it up with Fenty Beauty Full-Bodied Foundation Brush or Precision Makeup Sponge, then smooth it over your skin. Also, work in small sections at a time and build the coverage as you go. This trick eliminates any chance of your foundation looking streaky or cakey.

What message do you want to give to your Boots Fenty family during this time?

Use this time to focus on yourself and experiment with different make-up techniques you might not have had time to explore before. Now is the perfect time to reinvent!
