5 ways to celebrate Black History Month

2020 has laid bare the scale and impact of systemic racism all around us. This Black History Month, support the Black community and educate yourself about its history and culture – here’s how

1. Have a film marathon:

Whether you watch one each night or prefer to binge, there are tons of poignant, exciting, scary or hilarious watches for you to get stuck into – here’s a compilation of some iconic movies. Plus, you can never watch Black Panther too many times – rest in peace, Chadwick Boseman.

2. Attend a Black History Month event:

From webinars to immersive art and cooking classes, check out Black History Month to see national listings, so you can get involved wherever you live.

3. Support a Black business:

Give back directly to the Black community by supporting a Black entrepreneur. Have a gander at ItsBlackOwned – a genius directory of reputable companies and expertise: covering bars, restaurants, fashion, business services, beauty and grooming. (But do this all year, not just in October!)

4. Celebrate Black literature:

Honour the Black community’s stories by swapping out White authors for Black ones – pick a title from this handy guide. We also love the website, Well-Read Black Girl, which celebrates diversity in literature, and the book, Well-Read Black Girl by Glory Edim – a collection of essays written by Black female writers, highlighting the importance of representation in literature.

5. Educate, educate, educate:

Download the Black History Month Resource Pack. It’s the first national resource pack celebrating the enormous contribution Black Britons have made to our society. Available to all organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors, it includes key moments in Black British history, A4 posters, worksheets for children, poems and more.
