Once upon a time, when it came to skincare, the cleanse, tone and moisturise beauty routine was all you needed to know. But things have moved on: now we have serums, pre-serums, booster serums, acids, face masks. We’re more knowledgeable about which products to use according to the results we want, and we’re thirsty for info about the ingredients we’re putting on our skin. Over the past six months, internet searches for specific skincare ingredients have sky-rocketed. Google searches for niacinamide increased by 122%, while those for collagen on boots.com went up by 1,570%.

And then there’s what skincare means to us. One of the few positives of lockdown life has been that we’ve had more time to spend on ourselves. For many, that meant ditching make-up and focusing on what our skin – and we – needed. Cleansing our face became a ritual that bookmarked the beginning and end of another strange day. Massaging in serums became a mainstay of our prep for another round of Zoom calls. Our love affair with great skincare was consolidated. So, what does this mean for 2021? Well, it will lead to the launch of more amazing and exciting skincare products, which we’ll want to invest in to maximise our beauty regime.

High-level haircare

It’s about time we moved beyond the basic shampoo and conditioner cleansing routine – and this seems to be the year it will happen. Increasingly, haircare products contain ingredients we’re familiar with from our skincare routine. And for very good reason: our skin doesn’t end at our forehead, so all the ingredients that we know work wonders on our face can do equally wondrous things to our scalp. Combine this with the increase seen in at-home haircare – from DIY home-colour to hair and scalp care (hair masks have seen a 24% rise in sales, while Google searches for ‘scalp treatments’ in the UK more than doubled in the first week of the year – and it looks like 2021 is going to be a great year for hair.

Drop the filter

Whether it’s a knock-on of lockdown – when fewer of us were reaching for our make-up bag – or because we’re tired of being bombarded with images that lack authenticity, unfiltered and real skin looks set to be a huge trend. And we couldn’t be happier here at Boots Health & Beauty, as we don’t retouch or airbrush any of the images we shoot. And now the rest of the world is jumping on board. This means showing off skin as it really is – with all its pores, blemishes and fine lines – while embracing it and letting it shine. As a result, lightweight foundations and skincare with a hint of tint have become the most talked-about topics during virtual beauty consultations at Boots. It doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun with your make-up; in fact, we actively encourage you to recreate your favourite Instagram filters using your make-up. But why add a filter when you can be the filter!

Major brands are planning lots of new colour launches this year that work on all skin tones – so everyone will be able to channel their inner make-up artist and express themselves however they want. And, as always, when it comes to wearing make-up, the rule is: there are no rules!

Rise of the ritual

It seems that we’re now seeking out products that come with a side of wellbeing. And rightly so. If your face oil can help calm your senses, why wouldn’t you smother yourself in it? If your bath salts can help relax and soothe tense muscles, it’s a no-brainer. So, it’s not surprising to find that during the first lockdown, every hour saw 71 stress-relief products fly off the virtual shelves at boots.com. Our homes became our sanctuaries and, with that, our baths became rituals and our skincare a form of self-care. And that’s something that will continue to thrive – lockdown or no lockdown.

New self-care picks…

Botanics Rose Quartz Gua Sha
